Rekey vs. Lock Replacement

Rekeying may be appropriate when the hardware is sound. Replacement is usually better when the lock is damaged, worn, or no longer suitable.

START WITH THESE STEPS

Avoid making the problem worse and prepare the right information

  1. Rekeying primarily changes key access
  2. Replacement changes some or all hardware
  3. Door-frame alignment is a separate issue
  4. Multiple doors can be planned around a coordinated key system

Why an initial assessment matters

The same visible symptom can come from a key, cylinder, door frame, vehicle immobilizer, or electronic component. Clear information reduces unnecessary attempts and helps prepare the correct tools and parts.

When to stop trying it yourself

Stop if a key begins to bend, the lock makes unusual sounds, the frame is under visible strain, the vehicle shows an immobilizer warning, or a safe enters lockout mode. Record the current condition instead.
